Pet Food raises pet levels, which drives the primary squad attack and defence buffs your pets contribute.

Pets bring a primary squad attack and defence buff to your march, and the size of that buff is set by the pet's level. Pet Food is what raises the level. On top of the level-by-level growth, every ten levels open an advancement step, which is the bigger jump.
That structure is why food is a use-now item. Holding it delays a buff that applies to every fight, and the next multiple of ten is always the meaningful target because it unlocks the advancement gate. The advancement itself needs different materials, Nutrient Potions and Growth Manuals, and those are worth holding for a scoring window.
Food comes from the Beast Cage, daily missions, alliance chests and event rewards, and it goes into the pet that rides with your main march.

Early game

Mid game
Your main march's pet takes all the food, pushed from one multiple of ten to the next. The other pets stay at whatever level they unlocked at.
Late game
Late game food demand per level is high and the target pet is fixed. Keep pushing it toward the next advancement gate and check the pet's page for how much food the full climb costs.
