Nutrient Potions drive pet advancement, the step-change upgrade that sits above ordinary levelling.
Hoard it
Pet advancement is the step above levelling. Every ten levels a pet reaches a gate, and passing it takes Nutrient Potions and Growth Manuals together. The jump is big enough to be worth timing, which is why potions get a hoard verdict while the food that raises the level does not.
The gate has to be reached first. A potion spent on a pet that has not hit the level threshold does nothing, so the order is food to the threshold, then potions and manuals in a pet scoring window.
Potions come from the Beast Cage, pet event shops and event milestone rewards.

Early game
Level your first keeper pet to the first gate with food and hold the potions until a pet scoring event opens.
Mid game
Your main march's pet climbs gate by gate. Bring it to the threshold with food ahead of time, then advance inside a Hall of Governors pet phase or a pet scoring event so the step also scores.
Late game
Late gates are expensive and the scoring windows are the whole plan. Keep potions and manuals roughly matched, because each step needs both.
