Full background story

Quinn chases danger when he travels and comfort when he doesn't, happy to fill his days with wine, women, and whatever adventure happens to cross his path. He holds exactly one rule above all others: in the end, every person stands alone. Try to save somebody and, in his experience, you generally end up with two people in trouble instead of one, so why let anyone else's fate slow you down? Most men who meet Quinn come away impressed by his build, his sharp tongue, and a talent with a crossbow that borders on unfair. Women tend to come away impressed by rather more than that. Some people are simply born with charm, and Quinn is one of the lucky few, an easy warmth in his manner, something almost magnetic behind his eyes, a relaxed friendliness that hides just how deliberately he's working the room.

Spend an evening in his company and you'll hear most of his range on display. "I think this is a task for me, fair lady. Allow me to assist!" he'll offer one moment, and the next, "I must say, I am rather spellbound by your beauty, madam. Can I buy you a drink?" To a young man with talent he'll turn just as smoothly: "I say, I see you have great talent, young master." To a governor he might dine with, he'll lean in with, "Honored governor, I would love it if you allowed me to entertain you for an evening? We have much to talk about concerning recent affairs of state." Whatever line will charm the person in front of him, that is the line Quinn reaches for.

Where he actually comes from is anyone's guess. A wanderer running from some enemy with a long reach? A former man of the cloth who found the vices of the world too tempting to keep refusing? A few, noting a masonry symbol worked into his crossbow, insist he must have once belonged to a stone-workers' guild. Quinn is the one person who will not be drawn into any of this guessing, and his silence only feeds it further.

There is an older story that circles back to him, one that took place in a distant republic, about a senator driven out in disgrace. The official reason given at the time hardly matters now. What mattered was that the man was an idealist, and idealists have a habit of getting in the way of people who are trying to make money off a city-state. That kind of idealism does not get argued out of existence, it gets removed. Not long after, word of a fire spread across the capital, a fire that had gutted the disgraced senator's own villa. Nobody ever settled how many servants and household members died inside it that night, and truthfully, nobody wanted to. It was simpler, safer, to keep one's distance and let the matter stay someone else's tragedy. To be seen standing near a man struck from the senate rolls was to risk your own name along with his. Even mentioning the senator became something people avoided in decent company, and the name itself, once spoken so carelessly, came afterward to carry a small chill wherever it was said. That name was Quinn.
