Full background story

Amadeus fights with two swords, and he fights so fast that men swear he could cut a river clean in half if the mood took him. Nobody has seen him try, but nobody who has faced him in earnest doubts it either. He carries himself quietly, roughly, the kind of silence that makes strangers cross the street. Underneath it is a decency that few get close enough to see, and his adoptive father saw it early enough to bring the boy along on his own outlaw raids. Amadeus's counsel was never much good, everyone in the League learned to smile and ignore it, but nobody ever had cause to complain about his blade.

That reputation would be tested somewhere his swords couldn't help him: town.

He'd barely crossed into it before Jabel, a cavalrywoman with a temper to match her lance, planted herself in his way. A wanted man, walking in through the front gate in broad daylight? And a boy, barely old enough to carry a bounty that size on his head? She couldn't decide which offended her more. For a moment the air between them went taut enough to fight over, until someone shoved a shield between the two of them and the moment broke.

The League that raised Amadeus is the Unjust League, an outfit most decent folk call criminal to its face. Its leader goes by "Robin Hood," an outlaw's outlaw, despised most by the nobility for how happily he empties their coffers. So it surprised the town that Amadeus made no effort to hide who he was. There was something almost honest in a wanted man walking around in the open, and against expectation the town let him stay, warily, watching him go about his day rather than driving him out. Amadeus, for his part, paid for every service rendered to him, promptly and in full, which surprised him nearly as much as it surprised them. Could a town really be this fair? He caught himself wondering if there was an oasis worth building here, in a world with so little law left in it.

Quinn had his own theory, delivered with the total confidence of a man who calls himself a warrior-poet and an expert in love besides. Wasn't it interesting, he said, how she always seemed to find a reason to come needle him? How she kept turning up to watch him, again and again? That wasn't suspicion, Quinn insisted, that was a shy girl's version of flirting. "Think about it," he pressed. "A principled cavalrywoman and an outlaw with a heart of gold. You two have real promise." Amadeus said nothing, just stared back at him, unreadable as ever. Across the table, Seth had already started writing the whole exchange down in one of his little diaries.

Whatever Quinn meant to say next got cut off by a pitcher sailing past his ear. "I'd say we've all had enough to drink for one night," someone called out. "Time for some fun." "Finally," said someone else, and the bar erupted into another brawl.

Skills

Conquest skills fire in the Arena. Expedition skills fire on rallies and the world map. A hero who carries one can be dead weight in the other.

Conquest

Combo Slash
Casts enemies in the target area upward, then delivers three slashes for Attack×160-224% total damage.
Arcane Swordship
A burst of arcane energy on each sword slash deals Attack×15-23% damage to frontal foes.
Onslaught
Passive: +16-48% Attack while his Health is above 50%.
Double Parry (Exclusive)
Reduces his own damage taken by 10-30%.

Expedition

Battle Ready
+5-25% Squads' Lethality.
Way of the Blade
+5-25% Squads' Attack.
Unrighteous Strike
8-40% chance for all squads to deal +50% damage.
Discernment (Exclusive)
+5-15% Rally Squad's Attack when initiating a rally.
Born Leader (Talent, always active)
+3-15% Lethality and Health for all deployed soldiers, even when Amadeus isn't in the active march or rally.

Best pairings

  • His Talent, Born Leader, keeps buffing your garrison's Lethality and Health even when he isn't in the active lineup, so he never competes for a squad slot the way other heroes do.
  • Shares that same always-on Talent mechanic with Helga (Power of the Deer) — building both compounds a permanent buff across the whole garrison.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amadeus worth building past Gen 1?

Yes, he's the one Gen 1 hero worth keeping. Double Parry cuts his own damage taken by up to 30%, and Born Leader adds up to 15% Lethality and Health for every deployed soldier, active even when he isn't in your lineup.

Does Amadeus need to be in my active squad to help?

No. Born Leader is explicitly always active, so upgrading him pays off passively across your whole roster regardless of who's actually fighting.
