Full background story

To look at him, Forrest could pass for the villain of the story. He stands two full meters, bald as a stone, a beard hiding most of his face and a scar cut deep enough to make strangers cross the street rather than pass too close to him, every mark of it reading like the resume of an outlaw. And yet it is exactly that size and that face that make him the person the town turns to whenever its children need minding. What started as a favor to a few worried parents has since become something close to a second trade, sitting alongside the one that actually pays him: cutting wood.

Alina's father did not come home from the wars. Her mother works long past dark most nights to make up for it, which is how Forrest ended up combing the forest for the girl for the eighth time that month, wiping the sweat off his brow as he went, calling her name into the trees. Along the way his big hands kept finding wildflowers, almost without meaning to, and by the time he had walked Alina back to her waiting mother, there was always a little woven wreath sitting on top of her head, courtesy of the giant who claimed he didn't know why he bothered. He was never quite sure, if he was honest with himself, who he was really making them for.

"Thank you for bringing her home again," the mother said one evening, pushing her hair back and waving him toward the door. "Why don't you come in for once? Eat with us." Alina grabbed at his sleeve before he could answer. "Stay, won't you, Uncle Forrest? Mom's soup is the best in the whole wide world!" It was nearly impossible to say no to a face that hopeful, and yet somehow Forrest managed it, mumbling something about next time while his hands searched for anything to do with themselves besides shake.

Years passed. There eventually came a next time, and then many more after it, until the three of them stopped being a woodcutter and a widow and her daughter and simply became a family. They live now in a stretch of forest that sits like an island of calm at the foot of a mountain, the kind of place that catches the very first light of every morning. The trees there have always had the peak above them to break the worst of the weather. The family living beneath those trees has something just as steady looking out for them: what Forrest knows about surviving in hard country, and the plain fact of his enormous, patient arms.
