Full background story
Ask anyone in the province and they'll tell you the same thing: Gordon does not rest. The governor once offered him a full silver coin if he would sit still for a single afternoon and learn what he called "the art of resting." Gordon never collected. Word also travels that the governor is prepared to declare any day Gordon actually takes off a town-wide holiday, paid entirely out of his own pocket, expenses included. Neither promise has ever been tested. Gordon works through every daylight hour and keeps talking through the night ones too, muttering recipes and complaints in his sleep. So the governor's silver stays in his purse, and the town never has to explain where its public holiday fund would have come from anyway.
No figure to come out of the old palace united the kingdom's dinner tables quite like Gordon has, save perhaps the old king himself and General Cesares. His recipes have been lifted and served under other names from one coast to the other. But a full stomach does not buy a man friends. Away from the stove, most people know Gordon only as foul-mouthed, sullen, and impossible to please, a perfectionist who has earned himself the nickname "the mad chef." Almost nobody gets past that exterior to whatever is underneath it. Howard did, after Gordon pulled him out of an imperial prison cell with his own two hands.
The rankings never argue about who tops the list of the kingdom's finest chefs. Gordon owns twenty-five restaurants across the kingdom and still finds hours in his week to hand out silver to anyone who needs it and to keep the royal kitchen running besides. If the cooking world had a pontiff, it would be him. He is also, without contest, the fastest man alive to lose his temper. Walk into his kitchen on a bad night and you might catch him mid-tirade: "Get out of here, Jack! You call these steamed clams? I oughtta kick you out of the kitchen myself. Now get!"
That temper comes with a spine to match, and Gordon has never been shy about proving it. When his friend Howard ended up behind bars, Gordon didn't spend a moment weighing the risk, he simply went and got him. Howard could only watch the whole absurd rescue unfold and ask himself what kind of chef this actually was. Gordon went at the prison guards spatula-first, roaring "Get back, scumbags!" loud enough that none of them wanted to get close to him. Guard by guard, step by step, the two of them worked their way to the gate. There cannot be many stranger sights in the kingdom's history than a middle-aged man in a stained apron swinging a spatula with one arm while hauling a limp friend with the other. Stranger still, Gordon walked away without so much as a scratch. Strangest of all, Howard slept through almost the entire escape, rolled up snug inside a carpet.
