Full background story

Edwin is a strange one, too sharp to be dismissed as the village fool, too odd to be comfortable company for most people. At work he says almost nothing. It is only once the drink is in him that the quiet cracks open, and then he will hold a pub captive for hours with theories and stories nobody else would dare say out loud sober. People forgive him the strangeness easily enough, mostly because the stone he hauls up from the quarry keeps arriving on schedule regardless of what he believes about the world.

He does not have many friends left, not since what everyone still calls, carefully, "the accident." Ask the people who knew him before and they will tell you about a different man entirely: handsome, easy with women, built like someone who worked with his hands and enjoyed it. The mining disaster took that man somewhere Edwin has not been able to follow him back to. He was the foreman of the crew that got trapped underground that day, and some part of him has never stopped carrying that.

The memory comes back to him whole, voices and all. The miners below, screaming for anyone to hear them: "Help us! Help!" His own voice, cracking: "Just hold on. I'm coming!" Someone grabbing his arm before he could reach the shaft: "Are you crazy? If you go down there, you're dead too!" "But I can't leave them!" And the answer that has never once let him alone since: "The storm's already shifted the foundations. It's impossible. Just bad luck, Edwin." Still they called for him, fainter each time, until there was nothing left but "Help us. Don't leave us down here to die, Edwin. Please." And afterward, once it was over, the same calm voice telling him how the story would be told: "Relax. I'll handle the report to the governor. Just give me a reason it happened, and I'll see to it he knows none of this was your fault."

The morning it happened, the sky had already gone the color of old iron, and the men on their way to the pit moved through air so heavy it felt like wading. Edwin himself was still in bed, paying for a hard night of drinking, when he half woke in a dormitory full of the night shift filing in around him. Someone nearby muttered that they might be in for a real storm today. That was when the dream took him, the way it always does. "Don't go!" He came up out of sleep shouting, chest heaving, his nightshirt stuck to him with sweat. The dream never fully lets go of him, not even now. But morning had come regardless, and Edwin got up to meet whatever it had brought.
