Full background story

Yeonwoo carries her sword the way other people carry silence, with total control and very little wasted motion. Those who know her admire the precision of her mind as much as the sharpness of her eye, an ability to look at a situation from an angle nobody else thought to try, likely earned across years of traveling further than most people ever will. Friend or enemy, anyone standing near her learns quickly to stay alert.

"Accomplishing something is hard, but ruining it is easy." That single line has guided her for as long as she can remember. On her travels she watched person after person trade away their convictions for some quick and shallow gain, and it left its mark on her. Everyone claims to understand the value of sticking with something. Almost nobody actually lives it. "A blade must be honed a thousand times to be sharp, and a dance takes a lifetime of dedication to master," she says, and she means it literally, folding that same standard of swordsmanship into every part of how she lives.

She picked up a sword for the first time at five years old, a ceremonial blade nearly as tall as she was. While other children her age were still chasing each other around in the dirt, Yeonwoo was up before dawn, working her stance over and over with a quiet, stubborn focus that unsettled the adults who watched her. She kept at the same routine day after day, hours at a stretch, without complaint. It took a full year of that before her father, who was also her teacher, judged her ready to learn even the most basic strikes. Nobody watching her then could have guessed what she would eventually become.

Now she trains through autumn to take in the spirit of falling petals, and runs headlong into storms at night chasing the grace she sees in swallows cutting through the wind. Everything she has witnessed on her travels finds its way, sooner or later, into her movement. Every time she draws through a form, she is reconnecting with what she believes and why she fights at all. Every time she sheathes her blade afterward, whatever restlessness was in her settles back into calm. She holds onto the idea that everything she has gathered, from all those years on the road and all those hours with a blade in her hand, will eventually come together into one final dance, a single motion that holds the whole heart of the world inside it.
