Hero XP levels your heroes, and it is one of the few items with no real downside to spending as you get it.

Use it now

Hero levels unlock skills, raise base stats and gate other systems, and Hero XP is how you buy them. Unlike shards, XP is not tied to a specific hero and it arrives constantly, from daily missions, terrors, alliance chests and event rewards. A hero you keep under-levelled slows down everything else on the account.

That is why the verdict is use it. The one exception is a hero growth event: if one is running or about to start, the same XP scores points inside the window, so it is worth holding for a few days.

The other decision is where the XP goes. Levels on heroes you never field cost the same XP as levels on your march and return nothing.

Early game

Level your first march as fast as the XP allows. Early levels are cheap and each one unlocks something.

Mid game

Keep the main march levelled and let the bench stay behind. If a hero growth event is on the calendar within the week, hold the XP until it opens.

Late game

Late game XP demand per level is high and the march is stable, so XP flows to the same three or four heroes. Growth events are the only reason to sit on it.
