Full background story

Rosa is the kind of woman people call impossibly charming without meaning to exaggerate. Her eyes hold something like a night sky full of stars, and when she dances, nobody in the room manages to look anywhere else. Those who've studied her performances closely talk about her sense of rhythm, bold and unrestrained, and the way she catches the light off the tavern's mirrors and bends it to her will until the whole stage seems to glow around her alone. By the time the audience realizes what's happening, she's already taken something from each of them.

Seth, a regular at the tavern who writes on the side, once tried to put the whole town's feeling for her into words: "Tonight, I whisper to you, my beautiful muse. You've stirred my heart, and blurred my gaze. The thoughts I hold deep within, I dare not let escape my lips."

Onstage, Rosa never fails to leave a crowd stunned. The moment the curtain drops, she becomes someone else entirely, distant and cold as a glacier, and anyone who tries to close that distance finds themselves pushed back out into the cold with it.

Then came the night the rebels came for the town. Families huddled in their cellars and prayed. Even hardened guards on the wall were shaking under the assault. Rosa climbed the wall instead of running from it. With no lute, no music but the crash of catapults against stone, she danced anyway, her dress soaked through with blood and snapping in the smoke like a flag someone had raised on purpose, and something about the sight of her put the fight back into everyone watching.

There's a journal that sits open on a table somewhere, bound in a strange leather gone pale and soft at the corners with age. The writing on the left side has faded past reading, save for a few words: "To... my dearest..." The right side has held up better. "If separation was written in our fate, why were our paths made to cross at all? Perhaps nothing in this world truly holds meaning. But if I must give our encounter one, then let the part of me you changed remain by my side, in your place, forever." Small round marks dot the corners of the page, the kind water leaves when it falls from somewhere close above. A door opens. The tavern's biggest star steps out of the cold night and into whatever warmth is waiting for her at home.
